An Exception to the Rule

by Shae Selix This piece originally appeared on the Arava Institue website.  Through my Masa scholarship, I have had the privilege to work for the past three and a half months at the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies in Kibbutz Ketura. Like many Masa students, I have been able to see the beauty of Israel, from the acacia trees in the Negev, to the mystical waters in the Dead Sea, to the Jerusalem stone in the capital. I feel that my experience may be particularly unique because at the Arava Institute I have had the opportunity to experience how Jews and Arabs have the potential to not only live peacefully together in Israel, but also become great friends. Of course, due to the timing of my stay, I have also seen that this is not always the case. Only weeks ago, the State of Israel was in armed conflict with Gaza. At the Institute, we all had to watch together as Israel was again in the spotlight of the world stage, and hopes of peace in the Middle East seemed even further set back. For many new residents of Israel, this surely represented a first opportunity to witness the tragedy of […]

Hazon is looking to hire two crew members to help staff our Cross-USA Bike Ride this summer. The Ride begins in Seattle on June 10 and concludes nine weeks later in Washington DC on August 19, 2013. The Cross-USA Ride is a remarkable opportunity to travel across America for a summer as part of an intentional community. Our riders will be fundraising to support Hazon and advocating for transportation alternatives across the country. We will visit over 20 Jewish communities of all sizes, including three in Montana and one in South Dakota. During the Ride there will be ample educational opportunities to learn about America’s food systems, cycling advocacy, and Jewish tradition. While all riders are fundraising over $2000 to participate, crew will be encouraged to fundraise but do not have a fundraising minimum. Requirements Completed one year of college Experience living and working in a group setting Must have a valid driver’s license and be willing to drive a 15-passenger van or a 17’ box truck Knowledge of cycling, cooking, social media, community organizing, environmental education, Jewish ritual practice, photography, yoga, or other skills is a plus Willingness to become CPR certified, take a food safety class or learn bike […]

Sukkah Bike Hop “the Coolest!”

“This was the coolest!” enthused Jillene Moore of Loveland, when asked about her experience cycling the Sukkah Bike Hop. Marv Goldman of Denver summed up his biking experience, “The ride immeasurably added value to the holiday: being outdoors, exercising, chatting, and eating with not only fellow cyclists and Jews, but also having the hospitality of families along the way.” Eighteen riders came together at the Chabad of NW Metro Denver in Westminster as the starting and ending spot for the three routes. Riders of all ages came from Boulder and across the Front Range, and from different Jewish backgrounds and cycling experiences. Read more at Boulder Jewish News. Last Chance to Register!

The Israel Ride is six weeks away, but it is not too late to join us. We have a great new route this year, including two days of riding up north. Details of our daily route options are now available – we will be riding through the Galil, stopping at the Hula Valley Bird Sanctuary, climbing the lower slopes of the Golan (with the Chalutzim do a bit more climbing!), and riding around the Kinneret. As per tradition, we will still spend Shabbat in Mitzpe Ramon, visit the Arava Institute, and end with a finale on the shores of the Red Sea in Eilat. If you are still considering joining us, we invite you to use the code “newyear” which will discount registration by $200. You can also share this code with friends who may wish to ride this year as well. If you cannot join us, we invite you to sponsor one of our riders. You can register online at www.israelride.org. Final discount expires Oct. 10th.
