Now, About Those Hills. (Hills, and more tips from an experienced Israel Rider.)

We will be doing a lot of hill climbing (sorry, it is just the nature of the geography here). Sometimes it seems like you climb all the way to Eilat, but that is not the case. There are some absolutely spectacular downhill runs that make up for all the intermediate climbs. Riding into the Maktesh on Sunday is a real treat (an 1100 foot decent) and another 1100 decent at the end of the day into Ketura…. Definitely highlights that you will remember for a very long time.

An Exception to the Rule

by Shae Selix This piece originally appeared on the Arava Institue website.  Through my Masa scholarship, I have had the privilege to work for the past three and a half months at the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies in Kibbutz Ketura. Like many Masa students, I have been able to see the beauty of Israel, from the acacia trees in the Negev, to the mystical waters in the Dead Sea, to the Jerusalem stone in the capital. I feel that my experience may be particularly unique because at the Arava Institute I have had the opportunity to experience how Jews and Arabs have the potential to not only live peacefully together in Israel, but also become great friends. Of course, due to the timing of my stay, I have also seen that this is not always the case. Only weeks ago, the State of Israel was in armed conflict with Gaza. At the Institute, we all had to watch together as Israel was again in the spotlight of the world stage, and hopes of peace in the Middle East seemed even further set back. For many new residents of Israel, this surely represented a first opportunity to witness the tragedy of […]

Last Chance to Register!

The Israel Ride is six weeks away, but it is not too late to join us. We have a great new route this year, including two days of riding up north. Details of our daily route options are now available – we will be riding through the Galil, stopping at the Hula Valley Bird Sanctuary, climbing the lower slopes of the Golan (with the Chalutzim do a bit more climbing!), and riding around the Kinneret. As per tradition, we will still spend Shabbat in Mitzpe Ramon, visit the Arava Institute, and end with a finale on the shores of the Red Sea in Eilat. If you are still considering joining us, we invite you to use the code “newyear” which will discount registration by $200. You can also share this code with friends who may wish to ride this year as well. If you cannot join us, we invite you to sponsor one of our riders. You can register online at www.israelride.org. Final discount expires Oct. 10th.

Sustainability in the Land of Israel

Jewcology is a diverse platform for Jewish environmental activists to learn from each other in order to educate Jewish communities about our responsibility to protect the environment. Hazon is excited to share these resources with you! We work to create a healthier and more sustainable Israel through our Israel Ride, our Sustainable Food Tour, and Siach (conversation). Learn more about sustainability in the land of Israel using this resource from Jewcology: By Rabbi Yonatan Neril Abraham and Sarah came to Israel over 3700 years ago.  Since then, significant populations of Jews have spent over 1600 years living in the Land of Israel.  For much of this time, Jews have been involved in growing crops, tending fruit trees, and shepherding animals, activities critical to providing food to sustain those living in Israel. Yet they also presented challenges to environmental sustainability in the Land. How did Jews manage to live in the Land for so long? While the Torah teaches that Divine Providence (in response to the people following the commandments) played the fundamental role, the Oral Tradition as redacted in the Mishna also provides insights.
