What You Need to Know to Understand the Farm Bill
“If you eat and pay taxes and care about your children’s ability to eat, you should care about this [Farm Bill] legislation,” said Daniel Imhoff, author of Food Fight: The Citizen’s Guide to the Next Food and Farm Bill, while interviewed on WNYC, New York City public radio, by Leonard Lopate on May 4, 2012. Food Fight is a lay-person’s best resource for understanding the history and present structures of the Farm Bill. During this particular interview, Imhoff covers everything from growing corn to fuel our cars and the New Zealand government’s elimination of agricultural subsidies, to the industrialization of organic agriculture.
Imhoff concludes that nothing is more important than food and that we don’t invest nearly enough in it; however, taxpayers need to get something back, not in the form of subsidizing millionaires to become multi-millionaires, but by creating a healthy food system that protects our land and water, so we can feed ourselves now and in the future. If you need to be reminded about why you should join the food fight, listen to the complete podcast.
This is the latest in a series of regular updates on the development of the next Farm Bill which will be provided by Judith Belasco, Director of Programs at Hazon. If you are interested in writing about your work on the Farm Bill, please be in touch.
