Ways to Help Beit She’an, Israel November 1st 2012 / 16th Cheshvan 5773 Dear All, Both for the East Coast as a whole, and for us as an organization, this has been a week of improvisation in the wake of Hurricane Sandy – and we’re hardly out of the thick of it yet. With Lower Manhattan – including our office building – having been flooded and power out (according to a neighbor, Maiden Lane “basically was the East River”). The New York staff are working from laptops and coffee shops, volunteering where they can. They have been home, with and without power, with and without kids, doing what they can. Overall, I’m struck by the incredible spirit of generosity and community that has taken over New York as those more fortunate help out those in need. As I write, the US death toll from Hurricane Sandy is now at 75 people. More than 6,000 New Yorkers are at shelters instead of their homes. The cost in terms of destruction, of homes and buildings, is obviously enormous. One of those buildings is at Isabella Freedman in Connecticut, where a 100-year old tree crushed the roof of the main building. Click here […]

[Newsletter] October 11 – What’s Happening at the Food Conference?
The 2012 Hazon Food Conference Scholarships Available Bring a CSA to Your Community From Our Friends Care to Share What’s Happening at the Food Conference? With the end of the Fall Chagim, we transition from a time of abundant meals and harvest into the quiet of Winter. As the next few months will be a time of rest for the ground, we have an opportunity to rest as well, and reflect on the systems that bring us our food, whether we grow our own, get it from a local CSA, or buy it at the supermarket. This December 6-9, the annual Hazon Food Conference will be held at the Isabella Freedman Jewish Retreat Center in Falls Village, Connecticut. For years we have come together to discuss and explore issues pertaining to food both locally and globally, bringing educators and students to convene over topics ranging from food justice to food preservation, history to mindful eating, the Jewish Food Movement to Shmitta. This year, we are asking new questions: What are communities around the country doingto promote food justice? What makes gefilte fish sustainable? How do you get your Jewish institution to serve healthy food? What can we learn from recent […]

It’s one of my favorite holidays: Sitting in a sukkah; the lulav and etrog; celebrating the harvest; feeling exposed to the world in good ways; thinking about relationship to place, both locally and in relation to Israel. Celebrating the change of season. Liz and I are going to Isabella Freedman for Sukkahfest this Sunday, Freedman being the perfect place to spend Sukkot as the New England leaves start to change color; and Sukkot being the perfect time to be at Isabella Freedman, especially since this year the succah, which is huge and beautiful, has a solid foundation, and thus won’t slide into the mud if it rains, which the weather forecast says is statistically unlikely. (Sukkahfest is almost sold-out, but to get one of the last reservations, or to join a list for cancellations, check Isabella […]
