New York, NY
Dear All,Even though it’s August and the heat is at its worst, I wanted to mention the Shabbat of Hanukkah, which falls when the Hazon Food Conference returns to the east coast at Isabella Freedman Jewish Retreat Center. Freedman was where the Food Conference started, it’s the home of the Jewish Greening Fellowship, Adamah, and because its capacity is smaller than UC Davis (home of last year’s conference), it will certainly sell out. Early registration is open now and if you know that you’d like to come, please sign up now to book your place.
Right now, I’m training for the Hazon New York Ride which is also back at Freedman this year. If you haven’t made plans for Labor Day weekend, you should come. And please don’t be deterred by the fundraising. It’s really quite easy and we’ll provide you with lots of support.
Executive Director, Hazon
P.S. At this year’s New York Ride, we’re able to offer a low-cost housing option for those wishing to join us for Shabbat. Registration is only $100 if you bring a tent and share showers and other facilities. Register as “shabbat-only” and use the discount code “tent”.
The Hazon New York Ride is only a month away!
Labor Day Weekend, August 31-September 3, 2012
Summer is almost over and Labor Day weekend is around the corner. See who’s attending this year (hint: all your friends are going!), check out this year’s amazing route options, and get a taste of the Shabbat program.
NEW! At this year’s New York Ride, we’re able to offer a low-cost housing option for those wishing to join us for Shabbat. Registration is only $100 if you bring a tent and share showers and other facilities. Register as “shabbat-only” and use the discount code “tent”.
Crew Wanted: Support the People of the Bike
Crew is only $225 (or $100 if you bring your own tent). Enjoy an off-duty Shabbat and spend Sunday and Monday running themed rest stops for riders. You’ll support the riders by setting up lunch, cheering riders up the most challenging hills, helping to transport luggage and gear, and helping to ensure riders arrive at their destination safely. The crew is an amazing team of hard-working people and the ride would not be a success without them. Not to mention, it’s also the cheapest way to spend a weekend at Isabella Freedman. Register today as “Avodah Crew” or email David with any questions. Use the discount code “tent” if plan to bring your own tent.
This week, the ride began in Dayton, dipped into West Virginia, and ends in Pittsburgh. See what’s happening in Pittsburgh.
Next week, the riders travel through Maryland and complete their Journey in Washington DC. Join us at the finish line.
Highlights, live from the road:
- Serene welcomes new riders to the trip. They joined at one of the most challenging points, but she reassures them they’re in the best of company.

Join us at the Hazon Cross-USA Ride Finale in Washington DC
Nine weeks ago, the Hazon Cross-USA Ride left Seattle and next week it ends in Washington DC, 3,600 miles later. Our 11 cross-country cyclists and dozens of others who have joined along the way have raised over $120,000 in support of sustainable food systems from over 1200 donors.
They have visited 13 states, climbed the Rockies and the Appalachians, and crossed the Missouri, Mississippi, and Ohio Rivers. They have met farmers, policy makers, rabbis, and ordinary people hungry to learn how they can bring Hazon’s work to their community.
We invite you join us at the finish line next week to celebrate the riders and the end of an unforgettable journey.
At 3 PM, friends and family members are encouraged to greet the riders as they end their ride. Gather at Lafayette Park, opposite the White House and look for our Hazon and Cross-USA Ride banners. After a congratulations and a quick photo op, the riders will continue to their overnight accommodations to settle in.
If you are joining us at the finish line, please RSVPso we can let you know further details.

The Hazon CSA (Community-Supported Agriculture) program represents one of the many ongoing efforts from Hazon to promote local, sustainable agriculture in the American Jewish community. Founded in 2004, our CSA program has 58 sites in the US, Canada, and Israel, and over 2,300 member households. In aggregate, since the program was founded, Hazon CSA sites have put close to eight million dollars of Jewish purchasing power into local, sustainable farms. As the middle of August quickly approaches, we are entering the height of the CSA season for many of our northern sites, and sites in the southern latitudes are gearing up for the fall! What a great time to celebrate the current season, and encourage the formation of many more new additions to Hazon CSA sites in the year to come!
This week, we thought that this would be an appropriate time to take the opportunity to highlight some of the fantastic, exciting, and meaningful things that are going on at sites across the Hazon CSA network. Here are a few examples of inspiring activities and programming from our sites in Vancouver, Poughkeepsie, and West Hartford.
