A Closer Look at the 2012 Farm
Bill
By Aliza R. Wasserman
Original posted on The Jew and the Carrot
While headlines about the Farm Bill focus on the role of commodity subsidies in creating the ubiquity of processed foods in the U.S. (and increasingly in the global) food system, on the final day of the 2011 Hazon Food Conference, some of the most passionate and committed members of what some are calling the “new Jewish food movement” got a deeper look at the details of the policy landscape that shapes the way the U.S. food system functions and influences the rest of the globe…

Ekar Farm and the Fair Food Network
Aaron Ney, Program Manager of Ekar Farm in Denver, does some “number crunching” based on Fair Food’s production and distribution facts. His findings conclude that “Ekar Farm engaged 1,200 community volunteers in growing 8000 pounds of urban organic vegetables, of which, 7000 pounds were donated to the Jewish Family Service Weinburg Food Pantry, with a market value of $45,000, feeding 2000 people a month during our harvest season. We did this using under 200,000 gallons of water.”
If you are interested in joining a book club to discuss Oran Hesterman’s Fair Food, please contact Hilla Abel at hilla_abel@hotmail.com. The book club will take place in November.

Taste the Sustainable Flavors of Israel
By Dr. Jeremy Benstein
Originally posted on The Jew and the Carrot
When you think of food — what comes to mind? Usually we think of tastes, smells — the sensual experiences of eating. If we dig a little deeper, we’ll get to issues of producing food (growing, raising, processing…) and preparing it — buying, cooking. If we really “unpack” the idea — we’ll think about the lack of it — hunger — and all the different social, economic, environmental, and political issues that are embedded in our food system that makes it the way it is…

Grab Life by the Handlebars!
“When I started the ride, I was a 20-year-old out-of-shape college student. By the end of the summer, I’d lost 35 pounds, discovered God and spirituality, became a vegan and an environmentalist, made great friends, and learned that I can do anything I set my mind to doing, no matter how far-fetched it may seem.”

Gleaning Days for Community Food Share
Help Pick Corn and Vegetables for People in Need
Sunday, September 18th
9:30 AM – Noon
Meet at Food Share, 6363 Horizon Lane in Longmont
Gleaning is going over a field or area that has just been harvested and gathering by hand any usable parts of the crop that remain. There are several Biblical references for gleaning.
Congregation Har HaShem’s Tikkun Olam Committee is sponsoring two gleaning days for Community Food Share. Teams will leave from Food Share by bus at 9:30 and go to local farms that have agreed to let us pick corn and other vegetables. There’s nothing to it but bringing a hat, sunglasses, gloves, water, and good cheer!
For information or to attend, contact Roxanne Bailin at rbailinbldr@yahoo.com or (720) 545-3939 ASAP. If you cannot stay for the full morning, call or email anyway.
