What’s for Dinner? Making Time to Be Home for Dinner

“I am not the only mom who isn’t a great cook… I’d like our meals to be more meaningful, connected, and playful,” said one Temple Kol Shofar parent at the launch of Home for Dinner: Hazon’s Family Meals Initiative.
Hazon launched Home for Dinner in 2011 at two pilot schools in the Bay Area. Why a program to focus on family meals? American family life, including American Jewish family life, has spun more and more out of control, with overscheduled kids and under-connected families. Dinnertime is a time when adults and children can come together after being apart throughout the day; a unique time for families to break bread, interact and reconnect. Research has shown that when families eat together, everyone is more likely to eat healthier meals. Your kids are less likely to become overweight or obese, are more likely to stay away from cigarettes, alcohol, marijuana, and other illicit drugs, and are more likely to get better grades in school. Family dinners make it more likely that your kids will talk to you and that you will hear about serious problems.

Hazon Cross-USA Ride Begins in Seattle
Join for a One-Day Ride in Seattle, Just a Week Away
Registration includes breakfast, lunch, and road support on a 45-mile route from Kenmore to Carnation
On June 10, 2012, the Hazon Cross-USA Ride is launching from Seattle. We invite you to join us for this incredible event and have the unique opportunity to cycle with the riders who are on a journey across the country!
Adult Registration is $50, Teens and Kids are $25.
You can also join us for longer segments, including a one-week ride from Seattle to Spokane, or five weeks from Seattle to Minneapolis.
Celebrate the Launch with the Riders
Saturday evening, June 9th
Riders, supporters, family, and friends are welcome to join the Cross-USA Ride community for an evening talk on Jewish tradition and sustainable food systems, followed by Havdalah at Bastyr University in Kenmore. Rabbi Aaron Meyer from Temple De Hirsch Sinai will speak on Land ecology and Food systems. Dinner is at 7:30 PM. Please arrive by 7:25 PM.
Sunday, June 10th
The ride will kick off at 9:00 AM on Sunday morning with a celebration and ceremony with supporters, riders, volunteers and community members incorporating Jewish tradition and celebration of this ride. To come for the launch ceremony and see the cyclists off, please arrive by 8:30 AM.

We are able to provide grants to strengthen the Jewish food and environmental movement in Denver and Boulder due to the generous support of our funders: Rose Community Foundation, 18 Pomegranates, and the Oreg Foundation. Together we seek to provide small grants to enable local programs and institutions to take their work to the next level. To qualify, each project must help to create healthier and more sustainable communities in the Colorado Jewish community and individual Jewish lives.

Urban Adamah Art Competition
Urban Adamah is currently seeking proposals for original art (painting, mural or mixed media) to be installed on the side of the main office at the entrance to their Berkeley farm. Artwork should be inspired by the Jewish agricultural holidays of Passover, Shavuot, and/or Sukkot.

Adamah Adventures offers Jewish teens the chance to build confidence, learn outdoor skills, and be part of a unique Jewish community, all while traveling around some of the country’s most beautiful places. Summer 2012 treks include destinations in the Southeast (Georgia, Tennessee, and North Carolina) and the Northwest (Washington and Oregon). Many treks include service projects in addition to adventure activities. Scholarships available for first time campers and those with financial need.
