The Farm Bill: Live in Action
Work to pass the next Farm Bill is happening now.
Nigel Savage, Executive Director of Hazon, believes it is important for you to act.
I first raised the topic of the Farm Bill at our very first Food Conference in 2006. As an organization we’ve been learning and teaching about it every year since then. If we’re serious about a healthier and more sustainable Jewish community, and a healthier and more sustainable world for all, then it makes sense that we’d want to learn about the Farm Bill – because it has a greater impact on food systems, and the relationship between people and food – than anything else the government does.
Learning about – let alone influencing – the Farm Bill is remarkably complicated. In the last four weeks I’ve met with congressional staffers from four different elected officials, to discuss the Farm Bill, and I attended meetings on the topic with a series of senior administration officials. Two staffs told me it would be discussed and agreed in the next three or four months. Two told me they thought it wouldn’t make it through. The White House people said they weren’t sure.

The Hazon Food Conference:
A Light in the Darkness
December 6-9, 2012
Where will you be lighting the first Chanukah candle this year? We hope it will be in the Great Hall at Isabella Freedman, among the warm and inspiring community of the Hazon Food Conference. At our 8th annual Food Conference, you can expect to be amazed. Hazon brings the best and brightest leaders of the new Jewish Food Movement to share successes and plan for the future: What does food education look like in synagogues and day schools across the country? How can the Jewish holidays inspire us to take action for a just and sustainable food system? And did you know that beet greens could taste so good? With educational tracks on Food Justice, Institutional Food Change, Jewish Agriculture, Food Preservation and Cooking, and Health, and with delicious farm-to-table food from the Adamah farm, the conference offers food for mind, body, and soul. Register today at our super early bird rate. Question? Contact Anna Hanau.

Food Summit Success!
200 attend first ever Hazon Rocky Mountain Jewish Food Summit
The first Hazon Rocky Mountain Jewish Food Summit, attended by 200, marked a leap in the Jewish Food Movement in Colorado. Jewish restauranteurs encouraged us all to be vocal about our food choices at restaurants, the Jewish Petition for a Just Farm Bill was signed by many, and we found out who has the best kugel in the west.
- See photos from the summit.
- Read a great recap from one Summit attendee.
- Follow a sample of the live action from the conference as it happened on Twitter.

Jewish Farming Today
Jakir Manela and Nati Passow are young charismatic Jewish community farmers, who remind us that once Jews were an indigenous agrarian society with a sustainable food system and that the roots of social and economical justice and responsibility in Judaism, are in Jewish ancient agriculture.

Help the Denver Jewish Day School win an Orchard
Denver Jewish Day School will be participating in the Communities Take Root competition, with the opportunity to win an entire orchard of 25 apple trees for the school. They’re trying to turn an abandoned piece of land on the school’s property into a thriving piece of its South East Denver neighborhood. Students, families, and faculty will nurture the trees with the eventual goal of giving the fruit to local community food banks.
