Dear All,
I’m looking forward to July 4th—but I’m thinking about Labor Day.
That’s the weekend of Hazon’s New York Ride. It’s our 13th New York Ride, and it will be the first one since our merger with Isabella Freedman. It’s the Ride that has anchored all of Hazon’s work. This year we have new routes, an expedited registration process; new low-cost options for first-time riders; and a special discount for those who register between now and midnight on Sunday July 7th. Please join me on the Ride!
People historically have really loved the Ride. For some people the Ride has been the first time they’ve ridden a century (100 miles); for others the achievement has been to ride 30 miles, or to ride with a sibling or a parent or a child. We’ve had teens and 70-somethings and everyone in between. A good number of couples have met on the Ride; one year we had a marriage proposal at a rest stop. Another year one of our interns secretly arranged for the Columbia Marching Band to welcome us when we rode into the city. And the Shabbat services, and the yoga, and cocktails by the pool… are all rather great.
So whether you’re an experienced cyclist, or the new Citibikes have gotten you back on a bike for the first time in a long while, we’d love to have you. (And if you don’t want to ride, you’re warmly invited to be part of the experience by joining us for Shabbat, and/or crewing the Ride itself.)
And being part of the Ride makes a real difference in the world. The fundraising part of the ride shouldn’t deter you from riding: it’s a way to feel that we’re really making a difference in the world. Fundraising from the Ride supports all of Hazon’s work:
- The largest faith-based system of CSAs (Community-Supported Agriculture projects) in the country—supporting local organic farms, and giving food to people in need
- Strengthening the Adamah and Teva programs—two of the most impactful programs for children and adults in the American Jewish community
- Funding scholarships for all of our programs
- Helping us (we hope) to pilot the first interfaith CSA programs going forwards
Use the discount code “Nigel” for $60 off before midnight on Sunday July 7th. More information and registration is at hazon.org/nyride. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to be in touch.
And from this Englishman in New York: Happy July 4th…
Kol tuv,
Nigel Savage

Support Hazon with Matching Gifts

It’s a simple way for your gifts to make an even bigger difference. Hazon participates in over 20 corporate matching gifts programs—ask your company today!

Teva at Henry Kaufmann Campgrounds in NY
Teva is running an outdoor environmental education program at the Henry Kaufmann Campgrounds with 6 JCCs this summer. During our first week, Mid Island Y campers created rock paths for their garden in the shape of a cursive Hebrew letter “mem,” which also doubles as an “N” for nature. The garden is now full of tomatoes, okra, peppers, herbs, and greens thanks to the campers’ hard work. Mid Island first grade boys built a trellis for the beans that like to climb as much as they do!
