Nellie A.V. Chaban

Nellie A.V. Chaban   Assistant Director of Foundation Relations

As Hazon’s Assistant Director of Foundation Relations, Nellie secures funding to support the organization’s impactful programs and initiatives. She joins Hazon with 15 years of experience in the cultural sector as a program director, fundraiser, educator, and partnership builder. Nellie has completed coursework in civic ecology through Cornell University, and holds a master’s degree in elementary special education from Brooklyn College, along with bachelor’s degrees in theatre and broadcast journalism with a French minor from Pennsylvania State University. Nellie loves to dig for worms in her urban garden, travel the world, cook, dance, and make art, all with her husband and girl-boy twins, and serves as the president of the board of their nature-based, cooperative preschool.

Elana Eyal

Elana Eyal   Associate Director of Special Initiatives

Elana Eyal is Hazon’s Associate Director of Special Initiatives, dedicated to the organization and smooth sailing of our special events, including the Israel Ride. Prior to joining Hazon, she worked for a renewable energy (biogas) startup, and at a socially-conscious video production company. Elana is very connected to Israel, where she lived for 8 years after graduating from Tel Aviv University. She loves all things outdoors, creating art, practicing yoga, and has backpacked solo throughout the world.

Sarah Young

Sarah Young   Director of Strategic Partnerships

Sarah Zell Young is the Director of Strategic Partnerships and Interim Director of Retreats at Isabella Freedman Jewish Retreat Center. Sarah comes to Hazon with over a decade of educational and nonprofit management experience. She most recently was the Director of Finance at a flagship Jewish day school and a co-director of the Jewish Learning Initiative on Campus at Boston University partnering with Hillel. While living In Israel, she earned a certificate in educational and spiritual leadership at the Claudia Cohen Women’s Educators Institute, was an inaugural art fellow at Pardes, and a Dorot Fellow. Sarah is also a certified Urban Zen Integrative Therapist and an award-winning visual artist and is excited to be bringing her creativity to an organization that shares her values of learning from the wisdom of Jewish tradition to create a sustainable world for all.

Abby Bresler

Abby Bresler   Jewish Youth Climate Movement Manager

Abby Bresler is the Jewish Youth Climate Movement Manager. She has a background in youth climate justice organizing and helping movements center equity and inclusion. She co-founded and co-coordinated Sunrise Movement’s National Disability and Accessibility Volunteer Team, as well as the Dartmouth College Sunrise hub and a campus accessibility group called Access Dartmouth. Abby is a graduate of Dartmouth College and an alum of JOIN for Justice’s Access to Power Fellowship and the Jewish Education Project’s GENERATE Fellowship. In her free time, Abby enjoys cooking, writing poetry, singing, and spending time outdoors.

Bruce Spierer

Bruce Spierer   Program Manager, Climate Action

Bruce is a Program Manager at Hazon working on Climate Action. He supports Jewish institutions to develop and integrate actions to address the climate crisis. Bruce brings ten years of experience working in urban agriculture, community composting, and public horticulture. Additionally, Bruce has worked in nonprofit strategic planning and leadership development. He holds a Masters degree from New York University in Environmental Conservation Education focusing on Nonprofit Management. Bruce is an amateur naturalist, lover of composting, and an avid fermenter of food and drink.

Carly Sugar

Carly Sugar   Adamah Program Director
As Adamah Program Director, Carly Sugar (she/her) is the point of contact for all things Adamah Fellowship. A Summer 2015 Alum, Carly is grateful to have returned to Falls Village to organize and facilitate dynamic, immersive programming for fellows and alumni.
Carly worked as Founding Director of Giving Gardens at Yad Ezra– an educational garden and greenhouse at a kosher food pantry in Detroit’s suburbs. Through her life and work in the city of Detroit, on Anishinaabe land, she explores the intersection of food skills, Jewish ritual, and social change work, driven by the wisdom of Detroit’s food movement leaders. Carly enjoys long, often unfruitful, foraging walks in the woods, and hoarding frozen chicken stock.

Liana Rothman

Liana Rothman   Jewish Youth Climate Movement Director

Liana Rothman is the co-founder and director of the Jewish Youth Climate Movement, where she supports Jewish teens in taking climate action, and promoting climate justice within Jewish institutions nationally. Liana also supports the Hazon Seal of Sustainability program, and JOFEE (Jewish Outdoor, Food, Farming, and Environmental Education) field-building initiatives. Liana was an Adamah Fellow, Teva Educator, and JOFEE Fellow from 2018-2020. Liana is pursuing a MPA in nonprofit management and public policy from New York University. Liana loves to go on hikes, spend long hours on porches with friends, and is committed to building a more just society.

Hannah Fine

Hannah Fine   Adamah Apprentice

As an Adamah Apprentice, Hannah is excited to get her hands dirty, reestablish a physical connection to the earth, and continue exploring the intersections of food, justice, and Judaism. Hannah comes to the apprenticeship after 3+ years on the Hazon Detroit team where she also served as a JOFEE (Jewish, Outdoor, Food, Farming, and Environmental Education) Fellow. A transplant to Detroit from the suburbs, Hannah is energized and inspired by the city’s deep sense of community, especially as it relates to building resilience around food and land. She is excited to bring that with her to Adamah.
Hannah enjoys wandering, pondering, and incomplete rhyme schemes.

Simone Stallman

Simone Stallman   Managing Director of Hospitality

Simone Stallman is the Managing Director of Hospitality at Isabella Freedman. She comes to Hazon with extensive experience in hospitality management, event planning and catering and has had various roles at Isabella Freedman since 2017. A native New Yorker, Simone spends her time both at Isabella Freedman and in the East Village in New York City. She studied fashion and art at Syracuse University and enjoys going to see live music, snowboarding, cooking and spending time with her pup, Magenta.

Aharon Ariel Lavi

Aharon Ariel Lavi   Director of Hakhel

Aharon Ariel Lavi is the founder and director of Hakhel: The Jewish Intentional Communities Incubator in the Diaspora, at Hazon.

Lavi is a serial social entrepreneur and a professional community organizer, who believes that networks are key to shaping our reality. He founded his community in Shuva in Israel, the Nettiot network and was also Co-founder of MAKOM: the national umbrella organization of intentional communities in Israel.

In 2020, Hakhel was awarded the Jerusalem Unity Prize, by the President of Israel.

Lavi is also a thinker who believes Judaism can inspire and inform all walks of life, and vice versa. He holds Rabbinic Semicha, as well as academic degrees in Economics, Geography and History and Philosophy of ideas. He writes his dissertation on migration of ideas between US Jewry and the Israeli society. He was a fellow in several research institutions in Israel and wrote extensively on Judaism and economics, environmentalism and other issues.

Lavi lives with his wife, Liat, and their five children in Shuva, and in his spare time he is also a professional mountain biking racer and trainer. His recent book, Seven, deals with Shmita inspired economic, social and environmental ideas.

Rebecca Eisen   Human Resources Manager

Rebecca Eisen is the Human Resources Manager. She works with and for the employees, dealing with training, benefits, and ensuring all policies and procedures are followed. Rebecca has worked in the financial, retail, health, and start up industries. She received her Masters Degree in Human Resources Management and Labor Relations from NYIT and received her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from SUNY Oswego. Rebecca lives in Long Island, NY with her husband and fur baby, Maisy.

Vlastik Valasek

Vlastik Valasek   Senior Event Coordinator

Vlastik Valasek is the Senior Event Coordinator at Isabella Freedman Jewish Retreat Center. In his native Czech Republic, Vlastik was a social worker, motivated by his love for and interest in people. He completed the Multinational Leadership Training Program twice – once he focused on Education, Social Services, Management, Customer Service, and Counseling, and the second time he focused on Management, Business, Commerce, and Finance. Vlastik is responsible for many of the organizational aspects of our organizational retreats and family simchas, working closely on logistics with families and group leaders to ensure that Isabella Freedman provides the best food, programming, and services possible. Vlastik likes traveling, modern art, music, literature, and good coffee.

Sarah Wolk

Sarah Wolk   Information Systems Manager

Sarah is the Information Systems Manager for Hazon. She derives great pleasure from implementing, maintaining, and tidying systems of all sorts and sizes. Before coming to Hazon, Sarah worked in various Jewish nonprofits, followed by an AmeriCorps service spent with the New York Restoration Project, working in community gardens in the Bronx. Sarah enjoys learning of all kinds, especially Torah, which she focused on for two years as a Fellow at Mechon Hadar, while in the summers she learned Yiddish at Yiddish Farm. Sarah has some of the best coworkers around and is grateful to work for an organization that shares so many of her values.

Jakir Manela

Jakir Manela   CEO

Jakir Manela is the CEO of Hazon and Pearlstone. Born and raised in the Washington DC metropolitan area, he graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 2004 and went to work at the Isabella Freedman Jewish Retreat Center as a Teva Jewish outdoor environmental educator. He then moved back to the Chesapeake region in order to establish North America’s first Jewish Community Farm, Kayam Farm at Pearlstone, in 2006. Jakir was promoted to become Pearlstone’s Executive Director in 2012, and for the past ten years, Jakir has helped lead Pearlstone to its perennial status in the Slingshot Guide as one of the most innovative Jewish organizations in North America- helping to lead an amazing team engaging over 22,000 participants each year in immersive retreats, experiential Jewish outdoor education, and community sustainability initiatives. Jakir also served on the Hazon board during that time, advising Hazon’s leadership as the largest faith-based environmental organization in the United States. Today, Jakir works collaboratively with wonderful staff and board members at Hazon and Pearlstone, as well as funders and partners across the country, leading the new Hazon-Pearlstone entity into a new chapter of growth and impact. Jakir lives just up the road from Pearlstone with his amazing wife, Nets, and their four boys. He coaches youth sports and loves building campfires and making music with friends.

Shamu Sadeh

Shamu Sadeh   Managing Director of Education, Isabella Freedman

Shamu Fenyvesi Sadeh is the Managing Director of Education at Isabella Freedman. He is the co-founder and former director of Adamah, and prior to that he worked as the Director of Teva, and now he leads our efforts to educate all Isabella Freedman guests. He teaches Judaism and ecology, turns the compost piles, maintains the orchards, and supervises and mentors staff and Adamah Fellows. His wife Jaimie and kids Yonah, Ibby, and Lev help harvest and pickle, and DJ staff dance parties.
