Micro-Grants for JOFEE Leaders

THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN THIS OPPORTUNITY! WE HAD TREMENDOUS, IMMEDIATE RESPONSE AND THERE ARE NO MORE GRANTS AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME. HOWEVER, THIS POSITIVE RESPONSE SUGGESTS WE WILL EXPAND BEYOND THE PILOT. TO BE PUT ON A WAITING LIST (THAT WILL ALSO BE FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED) CONTACT BECKY O’BRIEN AT BECKY@HAZON.ORG OR 303-886-5865.

We are in a global environmental crisis. Jewish tradition compels us to respond. Thank you for responding!

Hazon is piloting a micro-grant opportunity for JOFEE leaders interested in hosting discussions around the book We Are the Weather: Saving the Planet Begins at Breakfast, by Jonathan Safran Foer, or the film Eating Animals. Hazon has designed discussion guides to accompany both in order to inspire meaningful connections and commitments to climate solutions by educating the Jewish community on the environmental impacts of their food choices. (Read more about the We Are the Weather Discussion Guide for Jewish Communities and Eating Animals Discussion Guide for Jewish Communities.) If you aren’t already familiar with these resources click on the links for information and inspiration!

For this pilot, grants of $360 are available exclusively to alumni of the Adamah Fellowship, JOFEE Fellowship, and current and former Teva educators. There are six grants and they are available on a first come, first served basis. Grant funds can be used to cover program-related costs and/or an honorarium for you; we do not need to see a budget or receipts and it’s fully to your discretion what to do with the funds.

You have a lot of flexibility around how to host your book discussion or film screening. Where to host, whether or not to bring in partners, whether or not to serve food, whether or not to charge and how much, how heavy or light the Jewish content is–that’s all up to you! We want you to design a program that best matches your interests, skills and networks, and that meets the interests of your community. However, there are some criteria we require for the grant and some details you should be aware of.

Program criteria:

  1. Your program must have a minimum of eight participants.
  2. Your program must happen before June 30, 2020.
  3. If food and drinks are served at your program it is strongly suggested that they are reflective of the values outlined in the book/film; you should avoid serving animal products from the industrial agriculture system.
  4. Your program is not required to be connected with or hosted/co-hosted by a Jewish organization, though it is encouraged.
  5. This line must be included in all the promotion for your program: “This program is made possible in part by a grant from Hazon” and include the Hazon logo
  6. We ask that you send us the names and email addresses of all participants in order to support post-programming follow up and impact reporting. Let your participants know Hazon will be in touch about staying involved.

Hazon support for programs:

  1. Hazon will provide you with one (required) 15-30 minute consultation call with Becky O’Brien, Hazon’s Director of Food Climate, before your program. And more time is available if you would find that helpful.
  2. Hazon will provide you with a short post-program debrief, either through an online survey or call with Becky. Grant checks will be mailed after this step has been completed.
  3. If you do your program around Eating Animals, you may list Hazon as a co-sponsor and use our copy of the film and screening license ($300 value); otherwise you must get your own copy and license. The guide is downloadable for free. If you do your program around We Are the Weather, we will provide you (if needed) with one copy of the book and one hard copy of the discussion guide, which is downloadable for free. You and/or the participants will need to acquire any further copies needed.
  4. Hazon will provide you with information about relevant Hazon programs and resources (Hazon Seal of Sustainability, Hazon Food Conference, Adamah Fellowship, etc.) to share with your participants. And, because your program will be one of many happening around the country, Hazon will provide you with language to share with participants so they understand and feel like they are — wonderfully! — part of a larger national conversation and part of a movement of collective action.
  5. Hazon will support you in measuring the impact of your program. You will be provided with 1-3 questions to ask participants and you will collect and report their responses. These may include “Did this program shift your understanding of what it means to be Jewish?” And, “Will you make a commitment now to changing your food choices to support a more ethical, sustainable food system?”

Grants are available on a first come, first served basis. Micro-grants are no longer available and the brief application is currently closed. If you have questions, contact Becky@Hazon.org
