Bike Challenge

We did it!! This past May, my partner made a suggestion, “Let’s try to put more miles on our bikes than we do our cars between Memorial Day and Labor Day this year.” To some, this may seem like an impossible task, but when we bought our home a few years ago, we chose a place with a bike path in the back yard. I am an environmental educator, and our family values reflect a constant consideration of how our actions affect the other species around us. Back to the challenge… As I considered the reality of this situation, I made a pros and cons list to see if this could actually work. First, we both work from home, so our daily commute consists of walking upstairs to our office. If I have meetings, they are generally within a 5-6 mile radius from my home. Both pros for making this a reality. I love my bike, my partner got it for me as a birthday/Chanukkah present a few years ago. We’re thrilled that you joined us for the 2012 Hazon-Cross USA Ride and we are in awe of your ability to bike such a significant distance. We hope to see you back at future Hazon rides and events with your friends and family! This year, the Cross-USA Ride helped share Hazon’s work of creating healthier and more sustainable communities in the Jewish world and beyond with communities all across the country and we thank you for being part of this initiative. [Cross-USA Ride] Participant Email May 2

Dear Rider, We have just five weeks to go before the ride launches from Seattle! If you are flying into Seattle be sure to book your tickets. Plan on arriving at Bastyr University no later then 12:00 PM on Thursday, June 7th. If you are starting at a later time, please see our new travel page. We had the exciting opportunity to drive from Seattle to Minneapolis/St. Paul last week. We got a great glimpse of the routes, the accommodations, and got to meet with some phenomenal members of our host communities, both Jewish and non-Jewish. Take a look at our trip on our blog! We will be using this site to blog throughout the summer. Make sure to take the time to get to know your bicycle if you haven’t yet already and send out those emails to potential supporters. Countdown: Three months to go! The Cross-USA Ride community is growing, and we’re now a team of 28 riders. As someone who signed up for this amazing ride, we know how you would love to have a friend on the ride with you. Talk about this ride! Tell everyone you meet! Talk to your rabbi to see if you can speak about it at your synagogue. Tell your colleagues, teachers, and fellow bike enthusiasts about the trip. You never know who might be excited to sign up for this ride! We have posters available to download that you can print out and post in your community. We can also mail you some oversized ones.
