Golden Gate Ride: Important Information for Riders and Crew

We couldn’t be more excited to come together as a community next week for the 4th Annual Hazon Golden Gate Ride: Pedaling for a Healthy Planet. Prepare for an Extraordinary Weekend!

A Note from Volunteer Ride Co-Chairs Erica & Adam   Dear Hazon Community, Ten days from now we will gather in the rolling hills of Marin to share our values of environmentalism, health, and sustainability in the Jewish world and beyond. We hope to be catalysts for positive change through the vitality generated from our cycling adventures, crew spirit, and engaging Shabbat programming. Gear up, bring your ruach(spirit), positivity, and openness — prepare to leave with a spark! If we have not yet had the chance to meet, please make sure to come say hello to us – Adam and Erica – your friendly volunteer co-chairs for the 2013 Golden Gate Ride. Adam will be riding his spiffy new Trek bicycle and Erica will be supporting riders as an enthusiastic crew member. 4th Annual Hazon Golden Gate Ride The Golden Gate Ride is now just five weeks away. With great anticipation and excitement, Hazon staff and Planning Committee members are looking forward to seeing you there and sharing this experience with you. Logistics Form All participants must submit a completed logistics form by Monday, May 6th. The logistics form asks about transportation, housing, and other details and will enable us to best accommodate your individual needs. On the weekend of May 3-4, Jewish communities read the Torah portion of Behar, which contains the teachings of Shmita. To honor the Shmita values of abundance, resiliency, and redistribution, Hazon invites you to join us for a full day of great events on May 5, 2013 in Berkeley and San Francisco, CA. In the spirit of Shmita, we are offering most aspects of this community day on the basis of donations, though some of the workshops may cost money.  Please share what you can. Hazon in Los Angeles!

Hazon Events in Los Angeles Hazon, the largest Jewish Environmental organization in North America, is landing in L.A. with two upcoming events! First, we’re partnering with Netiya to present an information session about food procurement in Jewish institutions. Then, we’re leading a free training bike ride to help you get outdoors and get in shape. Details for both events are below — we hope you’ll join us! Thursday, April 11th Just Food: Get the 411 on Food Procurement for your Synagogue If you are a part of your Temple’s Green Team, coordinate events, make food purchasing decisions (or know who does), or are just interested in affordable, fresher, more nutritious food that aligns with your Jewish values–come to our panel discussion on April 11th at Temple Isaiah! How we purchase food for events and services is one of the many ways for institutions to express their ethics and values. Congress Back at Work… But Not on the Farm Bill

Just to recap: Congress left DC in July with a Farm Bill mess: 5-year Farm Bill legislation was moved aside in the House for a Disaster Relief Bill, which was turned into discussion about a one-year  short term bill while the Senate was holding on to the version of the Farm Bill they passed in June. Ultimately, the session closed and the two houses couldn’t agree on what type of bill to pass, let alone what the details of the bill would be. (more…)
