Adamah Farm & Fellowship

Adamah cultivates the soil and the soul to produce food, to build and transform identities and to gather a community of people changing the world. We grow organic vegetables, fruit, herbs, goats, flowers, eggs, and we grow people through experiences with ecology, food production, social justice, spiritual practice, a vibrant evolving Judaism, and intentional community.

This year, as people stay at home and social distance, Adamah is offering a virtual program. Adamah at Home will continue to grow the earth-based Jewish community we have been cultivating for seventeen years. The miracle of the internet will allow us to creatively continue the Adamah conversation, adapt some of the embodied and experiential elements of our programming to this current moment, and open up to a wider audience than we’ve ever been able to reach before. 

Adamah at Home, is a three-week program to build food skills, ecological connection and Jewish community, September 8th-25th or October 5th-25th. It is open to all 18 and older who can commit to 15 hours a week of live video learning and connection. We will support students in getting their hands dirty – growing food on balconies or in backyards, preparing and preserving food in the kitchen, and exploring their local food system. We are offering this program at a sliding scale.  Applications are due September 5th or October 3rd, or until 25 spots are filled. 

We recognize that white supremacy and other systems of power disproportionately impacts accessibility to programs like these for People of Color and members of other marginalized communities. Centering these communities in our work is something we value highly, and we strongly encourage applications from people with these identities.

  • Increase confidence in accessing Jewish text, ritual, and prayer.
  • Increased confidence in growing plants and pickling.
  • Ability to articulate connections between Judaism and sustainability.
  • Greater understanding of Jewish spiritual perspectives.

What we expect of you

  • Your focused attention in online gatherings
  • Commitment to follow through with the program
  • Willingness to sit with the discomfort that sometimes comes with learning
  • Openness to learning with people whose identities (Jewish practice, gender, race, etc.) differ from your own

Program Cost

Program Fee

We are offering payment options for this program at a sliding scale between $180-$1,000.  We want Adamah’s programs to be accessible, and we recognize that the current climate presents additional financial challenges.  There is no stigma attached to paying at a lower rate, and no one but the financial team will know this information.  No one will be turned away for lack of funds!  If you are able, please pay the full price or as close as you can.

10-11 AM Orienting You to Zoom & Slack (Optional) Adamah at Home classes will take place via Zoom, with announcements, resource sharing, Q&A and connecting on Slack. If these platforms are new to you, or you have questions join us. If not, we’ll see you at 5!
5-6 PM 70 Faces of the Torah Getting to Know each other and Community Norms w/ Carly & Shamu & Janna
8-9:00 PM Jewish Identities w/ Shamu Learn about the folks in your group. What are our Jewish stories?
Tuesday, 7/7
10-11 AM Avodat HaLev w/ Shamu Excerpts of sung traditional liturgy, wordless melodies, meditation and group sharing. We will share our 2-page Adamah siddur (prayer book).
5-6:30 PM Regenerative Gardening w/Janna Regenerative approaches build soil, store carbon, increase biodiversity, and maximize photosynthesis. Learn to design and execute a garden that goes beyond sustainability.
8-9PM Keva and Kavannah of Avodat HaLev- Shamu How does our particular expresion of prayer relate to the last 2,000 years of Jewish prayer in structure (Keva) and intention (Kavannah)?
Wednesday 7/8
5-6 PM Avodat Gan w/All Staff Staff will help you choose your kitchen counter, backyard, or land project and we will start to think through what you’ll need to get started.
8-9:30 PM Comparative Agricultures with Janna How is your food grown and what are you deciding between when you choose organic or conventional? We’ll explore the basics of how farmers make different decisions and the implications those choices have on our personal health, our ecosystems, the climate, workers, and social justice.
Thursday, 7/9
10-11 AM Avodat HaLev & Torah Portion Drash w/Carly Excerpts of sung traditional liturgy, wordless melodies, meditation and group sharing. Will include interpretive commentary on the weekly Torah portion.
5-6 PM Adam & Adamah: Bring Your Own Dust w/ Shamu & Carly We will explore one line of the creation story in the Torah and medieval and modern commentaries on the place and role of humans in the world. Language and sense of place, the particular and the universal, and earth/soil/Adamah are some of the themes.
8-9:30 Pickling w/ Carly A hands-on preservation workshop.

5-6 PM Shabbat Closing Circle We will reflect on the past week, what we have learned and prepare ourselves Shabbat, the day of rest.

5-6:30 PM Food Justice w/Janna & Carly Brilliant individuals and organizations are approaching injustice in the food system at every level. We will learn about the work of making food and farming more equitable and how we can each tap into it.
8-9 PM Avodat Gan Introduction and framing for your home growing project, whether it is a container on your kitchen counter or plants in your backyard. Staff will support you in small groups planning your project.

5-6 PM Compost & Redemption w/ Shamu How to and the religious, ecological and justice implications of composting .
8-9:30 PM Federal Farm and Food Policy What does the Farm Bill have to do with whats for dinner? We will explore how legistlation and regulations impact food and farming and what you can do to advocate for just and regenerative food systems.

5-6 PM Farming: Blessing or Curse w/Shamu Biblical, Talmudic and modern perspectives on farming and the nature of being human.
8-9 PM Community Listening Hour A practice of sharing and active listening in community.

Is this program right for me?  

Join us if you are looking to learn about:

Why an online program?  

Our hope for Adamah at Home is to offer a program that will allow participants to truly integrate our teachings into the place you call Home. We teach skills and offer experiences that help you connect to yourself, the land, community and Judaism wherever you are. 

Conversing over the internet is both a gift and a challenge. We will be able to include many individuals who wouldn’t otherwise be able to make the trek to our location in northwest Connecticut. The virtual program is not a replacement for an in-person experience in community on our farm. 

How is it different from the Adamah Fellowship?

Adamah at Home is a way to give people access to more of what we teach in the residential, in-person Adamah Fellowship.  While Adamah at Home is not a virtual version of the fellowship program we usually run, it is a way for us to continue to connect with and teach people, while we are unable to host them. 

What is the Adamah culture like?

Pluralism of all kinds is key to the success of the Adamah community. We strive to center everyone’s identities and we seek applicants of all genders, nationalities, cultures, ages, ways of Jewish observance and abilities.
