Setting the Table – Bay Area’s South Peninsula

Nov 2, 2014 - Dec 7, 2014

Oshman Family JCC, Palo Alto, CA

Thank you to the 16 families who participated in our first year of Setting the Table! See below for quotes of what our families are saying about the program. Check back soon for dates and details for our second year of programming or email us if you are interested in participating next year in Fall or Winter.

“My kids had an amazing time cooking healthy meals for everyone while we connected it to Jewish learning!  Everyone was asking for more!”  – Vadim

“Setting the Table is a fun way to engage with your child about the central role of food in Jewish religious practice and in spirituality and morality more generally. The educators were excellent at drawing out the kids and setting appropriate-level discussion topics, and the foods we made together were delicious.” – David Goldhaber-Gordon

This learning series is designed for families with limited experience in Jewish learning in the Bay Area’s South Peninsula. Jewish, interfaith, and religiously unaffiliated families are welcome. No previous background knowledge assumed. Educator Nechama Langer-Levin guides a cohort of like-minded families through sessions where you’ll:

  • Join us for the entire series or register for a few sessions (individual class themes and details online)
  • Cook delicious, healthy recipes even the pickiest eater will love
  • Learn healthy eating and lifestyle skills guided by Jewish values
  • Enjoy time as a family with interactive classes that will stimulate the senses
  • Discuss how to make the world more sustainable for all

Sessions may include:

  • FAMILY & FOOD with chocolate/carob balls, ants on a log, and juicing
  • GRATITUDE & HEALTH with soup, salad, and juicing
  • GIFTS WE BRING TO OUR FRIENDS & FAMILY with sprouted wheat bread, challah, and sourdough
  • BUYING LOCAL & MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR COMMUNITY AS A FAMILY with pizza-making and smoothies
  • GRADUATION PICNIC & CELEBRATIONS AT THE FARM with a potluck picnic

Location: Oshman Family JCC in Palo Alto; Graduation is held at a farm with a picnic

Program Fee: Registration is free thanks to a generous grant from the South Peninsula Regional Impact Committee of the San Francisco Jewish Community Federation and Endowment Fund. You must register 1 week in advance of each session/class.

* This program is targeted to families with children who may not be members of synagogues, may not likely become members of synagogues, may not have regular weekly access to Jewish family life; as well as their peer families who were never enrolled in a Jewish preschool program at all.
