A Jewish Year of Enough: JTS Day of Learning on Shmita

Mar 27, 2014 - 7:45 pm - 9:45 pm

JTS Matthew Eisenfeld and Sara Duker Beit Midrash, New York, New York

All JTS students, faculty and staff are invited to join us for an extended lunchtime program focused on “A Jewish Year of Enough.”

Join us as we begin the countdown to our next Shmita year (“Sabbatical Year”) which begins with Rosh HaShanah 2014 (5775).  We will learn together as a community about the historical meaning of Shmita (“release”), how it is observed in Israel and how it is relevant today, particularly as we focus our much needed energy on environmental sustainability.    We will begin with an exciting panel discussion featuring JTS faculty and educators from Hazon.  Following the panel, we will have an opportunity for group discussion and reflection about ways we can make the upcoming Shmita year meaningful in our lives.  What do we want to release this coming year?  What is enough?  How can we work together towards ensuring a sustainable environment?  We look forward to discussing these questions and many more.

FREE lunch will be provided! RSVP to studentlife@jtsa.edu by March 20.

Location:  Matthew Eisenfeld and Sara Duker Beit Midrash
